How to advocate for yourself

Self-advocacy means communicating your needs, making your own decisions and knowing your rights. When you’re faced with a new diagnosis or an unfamiliar system, it can be confusing and overwhelming, but don’t be afraid to ask people to slow down, repeat information or provide it in another format – or even seek a second opinion/review.

Sadly, the need for self-advocacy doesn’t end with your health – for many people with epilepsy, learning to stand up for yourself is vital when it comes to education, employment and access to your community. But don’t feel hemmed in by the term ‘self’ – a trusted friend or family member can help, as can Epilepsy Queensland.

To get support with:

  • Understanding your rights
  • Expressing your needs
  • Resolving a complaint

Contact Epilepsy Queensland’s Living Well team on 1300 852 853. We’ll provide advice and support or, if appropriate, direct you to the people and organisations that can help.
