Our Leadership

Every day our teams support people and families wrestling with a new diagnosis, a new challenge and the many age-old hurdles people with epilepsy continue to face. Together, we’re determined to make life better for the 30,000 Queenslanders and their networks impacted by this complex, undiscriminating condition.

Our History

Early History

Founded in 1969 by Doris Kemp OAM, whose son Robert was repeatedly sacked once employers found out about his diagnosis, Epilepsy Queensland sought to ‘enable epileptics to take their place in the community, to enlighten the general public, and increase understanding of problems associated with epilepsy’.

Building The Vision

Bringing together people living with epilepsy, parents, medical and allied health professionals and educators, the group wrote hundreds of letters and engaged the media in an effort to build awareness and stamp out discrimination.

Epilepsy Queensland Today

While our mission remains broadly the same, Epilepsy Queensland’s work has evolved and grown over 50+ years to include systemic advocacy – demanding changes to legislation and the scale and scope of services, direct interventions to ensure individuals are being treated fairly and able to access the services they need, one-to-one information, support and counselling, specialist education and training and large-scale campaigns and community awareness activities.
